Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 causes dvdshrink crash

Postby asperger » Thu Aug 28, 2008 2:40 pm

i.e. 8 beta 2 causes dvdshrink to crash when i hit the re-author tab. I think it's due to a change in MSHTML that dvdshrink is dependent upon.

LOL, I almost don't know where to start but I'll try:

  • why would anyone voluntarily use IE given the free and more stable, standards conform and safer alternatives?
  • why would anyone use a beta?
  • what the heck is MSHTML? I know there's a widely adopted standard called HTML, why should anyone use a watered down version by Micros~1?
  • you did read the announcement that DVD Shrink development has ended in 2005 so there will be no fixes ever?
  • nothing in DVD Shrink's functionality is tied to HTML except for the help pages which are called externally so how could it be affected by IE?
Solution: if IE should indeed crash Shrink, get a decent browser.

i'm not condoning the the use of one browser over another, i'm simply stating that before i installed ie 8 beta 2 dvdshrink was not crashing, after installing ie 8 beta 2 dvdshrink crashes and the debug output that would be sent to microsoft references mshtml.dll, after unintalling ie 8 beta 2 dvdshrink no longer crashes.

"(...)you did read the announcement that DVD Shrink development has ended in 2005 so there will be no fixes ever?"

This new incompatibility will only hasten it's demise.

How about putting the blame where it belongs?

Problem solved.

Actually it won't, ppl will keep using it cause it still does exactly what it's programmed to do: shrink movies.

Put DVD Shrink 3.2.exe in Win95/98/ME compatibility mode (Properties > Compatibility).

Thanks, this realy does the trick. Very pleased with the solution.

btw IE is a nice webbrowser. Keep comments on IE8 to MS and not in forums where people are trying to find a proper solution.

Right, so next time anything stops working the moment you installed a beta version of IE, ask M$ to fix it on their forums.

Thanks for the solution Zim - the only response needed to solve an existing issue.

I've uninstalled IE 8 Beta, I've tried switching the compatibility to Windows 98/ME (in which case, DVD Shrink won't even launch), and I even uninstalled and reinstalled the program. It *still* crashes. I get a "data errror (cyclical redundancy check)" msg during the Open_Disc sequence. I'm running it on Vista. What else can I do to get my DVD Shrink back???

I didn't think it was possible to uninstall IE8 beta - how did you do it?

"cyclical redundancy check" errors related to copy protection - DVDShrink cannot remove copy protection on new DVD titles (from the last 2 or 3 years). Use the free DVDFab HD Decrypter to remove copy protection then use DVDShrink only to shrink/comprerss the DVD contents it they are too large to fit on a standard 4.7Gig blank.

Thanks for identifying the solution, asperger! I too recently "upgraded" to the IE8 Beta and suddenly found that when I clicked "reauthor" in DVD Shrink, it crashed. I uninstalled IE8 (instructions for uninstalling can be found on the Microsoft IE8 support page - or google "uninstall internet explorer 8") - after uninstalling IE8 - presto! DVD Shrink worked again! Prior to this, I did try running DVD Shrink in XP Compatibility Mode - didn't work...

The Win95/98/ME compatibility mode only tricks the program by giving it some different program strings forcing it to "think" it's running on an earlier Windows machine.

Does anyone see this as a potential problem on Windows Seven? It comes with IE8...
